Ten on the 10th: Thoughts, confessions, and "Did that just happen?" moments from a first time pregnant girl

1. I thought I would love being pregnant. And in my mind, if you THINK you'll love being pregnant before you're pregnant, you have a pretty good chance of actually loving it.

I did not love being pregnant until about 20+ weeks in and am starting to regress back out of that stage. And based on the journey we took to get to this point, I have felt extra guilty about that at times.

I love, love, love feeling the baby move and am so thankful that I get to be pregnant, but I didn't really anticipate all of the places I would "grow", if you will, or the weird and random pains that are all new the first go-around.

2. I did not enter the second trimester energy burst until 17 weeks. Most times prior to that 17 week mark, I felt like a contestant on Extreme Makeover Weightloss Edition every time we went on a walk. Not a run, not a jog- a WALK. And now that I'm in the third trimester and feeling easily exhausted and large all over, I find myself setting mental goals during these walks. Like, "you can make it to the top of the hill and then there's a bench." Yes- totally watching weight loss shows with a completely different perspective from this point forward. Walking with extra weight is no joke.

3. At my 24 week appointment, I had gained 19 pounds. That's a little on the aggressive side.

4. At that appointment, I was told to monitor my fruit intake because my doctor was thinking my "natural sugar" intake could be affecting the weight I'd put on in the early stages. I decided to just nod and NOT mention my love of Brownie Moose Tracks (ahem, with caramel and chocolate sauce), S'mores Poptarts, and Dunkin Donuts, and just let him think that "the fruit" was the culprit that had tipped the scales.

In my defense, I did start becoming much more health-conscious after that point- albeit probably a little late for the quickly growing babe in my belly- and more-or-less went on a pregnancy "diet" that included the aforementioned "natural sugar" of fruit and (wait for it) vegetables with humus, along with more protein from cottage cheese, peanut butter, and protein shakes. So yes, I went on my first "diet" during pregnancy. Not to lose weight of course, but to give the babe a more well-rounded supply of the food groups.

5. At one point while I was munching on my carrots with hummus, I asked Matt (who, by the way, eats raw carrots nightly like they're an actual dessert or something) if people ate vegetables because they actually liked the taste, or because they were trying to be healthy. I've since sort-of started to like veggies more, but I've still gotta force myself to eat them over other foods (like crackers with cheese and balsamic or Italian bread with dipping sauce) that I would much prefer.

6. A few weeks ago, I was enjoying the most relaxing mani-pedi of my life when the lady massaging my hands asked, "What happen your face?"

I'm not even sure "it's a language barrier thing" helps make that one better. Apparently the pregnancy mask I've been working on concealing is just as obvious as I thought it was.

7. On our babymoon, a Dominican man asked me if I was having twins. I was only 6 months pregnant.

8. On our way home from our babymoon, I was all but lusting over this young twenty-something girl standing in line in front of us with her tiny toned legs and one-shade-of-tan face when she struck up a conversation with us. We got to talking about where she went to college, and when I asked her if she was in a sorority, she responded with, "Yes, ma'am."

Ugh. The "Yes ma'am" dagger that says you are obviously a LOT older than I am. I guess I was holding on to Matt's arm while we were talking and he said I squeezed him in guttural reaction when she answered with those words. haha. Your time is coming oh young cute college girl. Your time is coming.

9. About a month ago, our neighbors' parents were in town and the mom asked me when I was due. When I told her July 22nd with a smile, she scrunched up her face, looked slightly concerned, and gave a long, "Ooooh."

I retired that dress that day.

10. At the grocery store, a lady struck up a conversation with me about my pregnancy, and again asked when I was due. This time, when I said July 22nd, she was more direct and answered with, "Do you think you'll make it?"

...Yes? I'm not sure? I think so? You're not nice? ....still trying to figure out how to answer that one.

SIX MORE WEEKS 'TIL WE GET TO MEET OUR LITTLE MAN! Unless, of course, I really don't make it that long. ;) The countdown is on, and we can't WAIT!

  1. I'm sorry Heather, this cracked me up!

Enjoy this last month or so. Write down your thoughts. Save them to read and laugh and maybe cry about later. The emotions will be strong and you will need a good laugh during those first few months. Enjoy those sweet moves from that baby boy. And enjoy your alone time for now. You and Matt together and apart. Being a bedrest for three months I missed out on being pregnant....as far as being out and among family and friends.
The pregnant mask was something I had too. And had for a while after the boys. Any time I got out in the sun it got darker. It's gone now...they are nine :)
Oh dear, just wait for the body changes after! It's part of the beauty God gives women to become a Mom. You will hate them at first, but over time you will look down, around, in a mirror and however and learn to love your new body. It will tell a tale of your journey to becoming a Mother to an amazing new child in your life.
Looking so forward to "meeting" this sweet little guy.

  2. This was a hilarious post. I love when women are actually honest about their pregnancies. Others reactions are priceless. Seriously, some people need filters!

  3. Oh man, I've never even been pregnant and I would be offended by some of those questions. People just don't know what to say sometimes, I would LOVE it if I managed to look like you when I'm pregnant someday. =)

  4. I like the idea of blaming the fruit on the weight gain. LOL. It's suppose to be healthy, right??!! I think you look fabulous with your bump. And you're probably one of those skinny minnie's who will bounce right back after birth!! Can't wait to meet your little man. Did you guys come up with a name yet??

  5. You are so funny! I think you look amazing, who cares how much the scales say, it is just a number and the only thing that matters is that you and your little boy are healthy! As for your body after birth, just wait for the Dolly Parton boobs, I honestly couldn't believe my eyes when I first dared to look :) A x
