Ten on the 10th: Top 10 Children's Books for The Earliest Readers

Today's list is inspired by our squealing, wiggling, and book-loving 5 month old. Yes, it sounds crazy to say that he loves books already, but as you can see in the videos and pictures in this post, he really does seem to love looking at the pages and hearing our voices read to him.

And as I mentioned in Thursday's #nelsendays post, the voting of these books was in fact determined by the amount of squeals and wiggles that occurred for each book with the exception of a few that I love and listed at the bottom of the post.

When Ryan was younger, we would prop him up on the center of the couch and watch his eyes move side to side like he was actually tracking what we read to him- ha!

But now that he's older, he loves to wiggle when I read, so I usually lay him down in his crib or on his changing table and let him wiggle and squeal while I read his seemingly favorite books.

Who knows if this apparent love of books will keep up or not, but this teacher-mama would be super happy if it did. :)

So without further adieu, here is our list of :

1.
Hop On Pop-Up! by Dr. Seuss

I don't know if it's the pop-up pages or the sing-songy words, but this book is a for sure hit!

2.
Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell
This book has a pull down flap on each page that shows the next surprise animal. It also rhymes and has good contrasting colors with a white background on each page. It's also the #1 Bestseller on Amazon in the "Children's Zoo Books" category- and there are a LOT! (And side-note, #3 on that list is one of the BEST books I ever aloud read to my classroom kids. Such a great story!)

3.
LMNO Peas by Keith Baker
This book is so cute and fun to read! It goes through the alphabet and names the "peas" multiple professions for each letter. The illustrations are also really fun. This one gets lots of wiggles. :)
(I also found a companion book 1-2-3 Peas that I ordered... looks just as great!)

4.
Barnyard Dance by Sandra Boynton
I love Sandra Boynton. Her books have a great sing-songy rhythm which make them fun to read and listen to. This one is a hit!

5.
Dinosaur Shapes by Paul & Henrietta Stickland
This book is awesome. I'm really excited about reading it as Ryan gets older because there are so many math-related lessons in the pages. Each page asks a different thinking question, like the page that shows three different sized dinosaurs on three different sized squares and asks, "Who is on the biggest square?" It's also predominately primary colors on a white glossy background, so the illustrations really pop. I will definitely be checking out the other books by these authors!

6.
On the Night You Were Born by Nancy Tillman
Nancy Tillman's books are some of my all-time favorites. I love the message of this book that speaks truth about each baby being uniquely created for a purpose. And the way she writes the story in second person makes that message seem stronger and specific to your baby. And because the illustrations are so captivating, the story is a hit long before the words can make sense to a little one.

Amazon has a category called "Children's Bear Books" with hundreds on titles, and this sweet little book is the #1 bestseller at the very top of that list. It follows a simple pattern and has a song-like rhyme to the pages (I can't read it without making it sound like a song). We love this one!

8.
Buzz, Buzz, Baby! by Karen Katz
My friend Andrea introduced me to Karen Katz's books and I haven't read one I didn't love! The colorful illustrations and lift-flap pages make the book extra fun to read and listen to. She also has books for various holidays (the Christmas one, a gift to Ryan from his Aunt Dre, is one of our favorites!)

9.
My Little Picture Bible
Okay this book might be the best children's Bible I've ever seen. I don't think you can read it without being impressed by how simple and clear each Bible story is retold in kid-like language. Plus the illustrations are really impressive, so even though the pages are wordier than some of the other books we read, Ryan loves following along. In fact, you can see how much he loves it in the video below :)

10.
I'd Know You Anywhere, MY LOVE by Nancy Tillman
Another Nancy Tillman book, but I had to include it. She is a seriously amazing writer. And those illustrations?! Turning the pages of this book is like walking through an art gallery. The message of this book is so sweet, detailing the way a parent knows her baby's every last feature. We have the board book version of On the Night You Were Born but I think I prefer the larger, hardback version of her books because the illustrations are that much prettier when they're larger.

Bonus Books:

Love You Forever by Robert Munsch
This book makes me cry every time I read it. It's a little wordier and the illustrations aren't as vibrant as some of the other books I've mentioned, but the story itself is so sweet. My sister gave me this book before Ryan was born and it is one of my all-time favorites.

Baby Faces by DK Publishing
I've mentioned this book before, but this was (and still is) one of Ryan's first favorite books. Early on, it was the only book that he would consistently "talk" to when we read.

Black on White by Tana Hoban
This is a great first book as well. There are no words on the pages, but the contrast of the black images on the white pages is perfect for even the first couple of weeks when dark contrasts are the only things that babies seem to really focus on. For a list of other great contrast books, click here.

Guess How Much I love You (crinkle version)
Okay this is less about the story and more about how much fun crinkle books are. These are great for the car! I think every baby should have one- Ryan can be entertained for a long time shoving this book in his mouth over and over again. See for yourself:

Jesus Loves Me by Tim Warnes
I love the illustrations and gold-rimmed pages of this book. We sing Jesus Loves Me before nap time each day, but I only ever knew the first verse before this book (apparently there are three verses). So this book helps me practice the rest of the verses ;) and has served as a good transition to naps for us. The illustrations are really sweet too!

So there you have it. Hopefully you found a new book to check out for your little one or purchase for your next shower! Oh, and on that note, one of my favorite parts of one of my baby showers was having all of the guests write a note to Ryan in a baby book instead of purchasing a card. It was a great way to build his little library and a lot of times, buying a little board board costs even less than a card! Now I always pick up a book as my "card" for a baby shower. Just a idea!

I'd love to hear what YOUR favorite children's books are! Leave me a comment below or email me at notesftn@gmail.com. Thanks friends!

#Nelsendays2015 Week 1 and reflections from the past year

It feels so strange to write "Week 1" after documenting all the way to 52 last year.

When I first started taking a picture each day and documenting the week's photos on here, I wasn't sure if I would get tired of the process and/or forget so many times that it made more sense to stop.

Early on, I did set a reminder on my phone to help me remember, but very quickly it just became a part of my every day.

And looking back on my instagram account at the photos that were tagged under the #nelsendays2014 hashtag makes me glad that I started. It's really crazy to see how life can change in a year.

At this time last year, I was teaching 5th grade and just barely over the 12 week mark of pregnancy so still not even close to telling people outside of our immediate family.

Now, being in the classroom feels like it was a lifetime ago. I really do miss my kids a lot. Being a teacher was definitely my calling and I'm so thankful that I got to give the past seven years of my life to it... even if my original plan was to only give five ;) But those extra two years of waiting on a baby taught me so much about my myself, prepared me for being a mama, and gave me sweet memories as a teacher that I am so grateful to have experienced.

I go into all of this to say that an act as simple as taking one picture a day has made me appreciate the ordinary days even more, knowing that those days are sometimes filled with the simplest and sweetest memories of this stage of life we're in.

Particularly on a week like this one, where our little buddy is working through his first real cold and needing lots of extra snuggles (and nighttime meals... his appetite has definitely not been affected!). Our days have involved little getting ready time as we've both pretty much stayed in our PJs (or in my case, yoga pants and a tee when I've managed to work on that workout goal of mine) all day.

So here's to another year of documenting daily growth for our little family.

Day 1:
Charleston trip from last week- making Mickey Mouse waffles with this sweet girl and watching her dance in between each bite. :)
Day 2:
A blurry picture because Tally was extra excited about having Ryan home. :)
Day 3:
Sweet boo fighting off a fever and giving lots of sweet snuggles in his sleep.
Day 4:
A sweet smile that meant the worst part of his little cold was over.
Day 5:
My sister, Noah and Maddox spent their last day of winter break with us and got to see Ryan get his feet to his mouth for the first time. He had been working on it for quite some time. ;)
Day 6:
Tally gave the perfect pose to sum up our day (week could also work here). The super cold weather couldn't have hit at a better time. Staying inside and lounging this week has been just what we needed.
Day 7:
One of my favorite parts of the day is reading books with this little buddy. He loves looking at the pages and talks and wiggles as I read. A lot of times I'll lay him on his back in his crib or on the changing table and hold the book over him so that he can have maximum wiggle room. This boy loves to wiggle.

On Saturday, my Ten on the 10th will be a list of my favorite children's books for this age, voted on by the amount of squeals and wiggling that occur while I read. :)

Last month, Anna from Living the Leviner Life wrote her own Ten on the 10th post of new and old things that made her happy. You can check it out here!

And tomorrow, Elizabeth Chapman and I will be interviewing each other on our blogs and revealing the banner and button for the Mid-Month Confessions link-up. Hope you're getting your list of confessions going so you can join us on the 15th!

Recent Meals... 5+ recipes included

With the holidays and our trip to Charleston last week, we haven't really had a normal week of eating in a while, so I decided I'd share a few of our recent meals in case of you are like me and looking for some new ideas to vary your dinners in the new year.

First of all, y'all seemed to be just as excited as I was about this new recipe that my friend Meagan shared with me. If we ate them again tonight, it would not be too soon.

If it seems like I've posted this recipe a lot lately, it's because we've eaten it a lot lately. It's just SO good! And so easy. And invovles the crock pot. So win, win, win.

Matt loves this meal. It's got meat, pasta, cheese, a little kick from the rotel, a little crunch from the corn... it's pretty delish. You can make it as a skillet meal, or layer it and bake it in the oven if you're wanting to prepare it ahead of time. It's our favorite "fancy" mac & cheese dish around here.

Another meal I could eat once a week is this delicious recipe from Mix & Match Mama.

One thing I will say is to make sure that the meat is completely covered in the crock pot so that it pulls apart easily after it's cooked. Also, I like to use soft shell tacos (just personal preference) and chicken stock instead of water to add more flavor to the meat. And then I top off the tacos with this yumminess:
Mmm... seriously so good.

Tonight I'm making this meal. It happens to be the most popular recipe I've ever shared, so if you haven't tried it yet, you should. It takes a little more prep work than some of the other recipes I've shared, but the taste is worth it. And it's pretty, so a fun option to try for guests too. :)

Okay, so now, I'd really love to know if you guys have any go-to crock pot recipes you can share with me? I'm over the taco soup/chili recipes for now. But would be open to trying anything else you guys are loving! I don't care if it looks appetizing or not. Sometimes the best meals are the ones that don't plate well (like this one... the picture kind of grosses me out, but it tastes so good!).

Thanks, friends!
Stay warm today!

French Dip Sandwiches

I take no credit for this recipe. My friend Meagan shared it with me when I was looking for a new simple meal that would involve little to no work on my part and still taste like I slaved over the oven all day. That would be the goal just about every day, right?!

This meal was SO good. It is a definite addition to our mealtime rotation and perfect for this time of year too.

Ingredients:
2-3lb round roast or chuck roast (just check with the butcher... or in my case meat person at Publix... to make sure it will pull apart easily)
One bottle light beer
One packet Lipton's Onion Dip Seasoning (looks like this)
One can French Onion Soup (I used Campbell's)
4 slices provolone cheese
4 hoagie rolls

Optional:
1/2 sweet onion (cut julienne)
1 clove garlic, minced
1T butter

Directions:
Place roast in the bottom on the crock pot and cover with seasoning packet, beer, and soup. If the meat is not completely covered, add water or stock (beef or chicken) until it covers the meat. (If the meat isn't completely covered, it won't pull apart easily.) Cook on low for 7-8 hours or high for 4-6 hours. Slice bread and place on a baking sheet. You a slotted spoon to scoop the meat onto the bread. (Reserve the rest of the liquid for dipping) Cover with cheese and broil for 3-5 minutes.

Optional:
About 45 minutes before you're ready to eat, saute onion in butter and garlic. Once the meat has been scooped onto the bread, add onion on top of the meat and cover with cheese before broiling.

This meal was so easy and delicious that it inspired me to want to make my own Philly Cheese Steaks too, so be on the lookout for that recipe in the near future. :)
